A grand wind composition of a very special kind, composed by Mr. Mozart”—this is how the work was described by a contemporary reviewer. It is now performed by the Wind Players of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Milan Turković. The work in question is Mozart’s Serenade No. 10 in B-flat major, K. 361, universally known as the “Gran Partita.” The “very special kind” of this masterpiece captivated not only Mozart’s contemporaries. To this day, its extraordinary stylistic diversity, the sweeping musical architecture spanning seven movements, and Mozart’s inexhaustible gift for melody leave listeners almost speechless—an achievement matched by few works in the history of music.
